Cognitive Disorders & Executive Functioning Skills

Occupational Therapists at Crossroads are trained to address cognitive functioning and executive functioning challenges. Executive functioning skills guide everything we do.  From making decisions, to staying on track with an activity, to planning and prioritizing a task, and finishing it without abandoning it. It allows your child to accomplish easiest of tasks to the more complicated and multi-step actions.  Children with executive functioning issues will suffer in a multitude of ways. Executive dysfunction can interfere with independence and the ability to perform activities of daily living.  Cognitive skills are an interconnected web of processing that allows for self-regulation, planning, organization, and memory. If your child struggles with emotional control, task initiation, task completion, working memory, planning, prioritizing, organization, attention, self-monitoring, cognitive flexibility, problem-solving, persistence, or shift in attention then they may benefit from assessment and intervention from our OT’s. Our OTs are experienced in treating children with a variety of cognitive delays including but not limited to learning disabilities, ADHD, dysgraphia, and genetic disorders impacting cognition such as Fragile X Syndrome, Rett syndrome, and Down Syndrome.
